2. Awards Committee (from 1973-1978 there was one committee that chose the senior scholar. In 1978 it was decided to give a student award and separate committees were formed: one for senior scholar and one for the student awards).

The Awards Committee gave the first Senior Scholar Award in 1973 and the first Student Award in 1979. The graduate student award was named for Stanley J. Zyzniewski of UVA and in 2006 the undergraduate student award was named in honor of Betty Wheeler, long-time SCSS member and professor at North Carolina State University. The Senior Scholar Award is named in honor of Richard Stites.
