The First Annual Harold Goldberg Happy Hour

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Harold J. Goldberg, the David E. Underdown Distinguished Professor of History at Sewanee: The University of the South, will conclude his 30-year tenure as Secretary-Treasurer of the Southern Conference on Slavic Studies at the conclusion of the 2024 60th Anniversary Meeting.
WHEREAS, Harold J. Goldberg has been the heart and soul of Southern Slavic, the oldest and greatest regional Slavic studies organization for three decades.
WHEREAS, Harold J. Goldberg’s insightful interpretation of a fortune cookie definitively established the unbreakable connection between the Green Bay Packers and the Southern Conference on Slavic Studies, as the fearless and undaunted Harold J. Goldberg reminded the membership in email after email.
WHEREAS, The Southern Conference on Slavic Studies is the friendliest and most collegial conference in Slavic studies in great part through the example set every time Harold J. Goldberg’s smile and laughter reveals his joy of being at SCSS while reporting to the membership at the annual business meeting.
WHEREAS, The Southern Conference on Slavic Studies will remain eternally grateful for the stewardship, calm leadership, and good humor of Harold J. Goldberg without whom SCSS could never have become all that it is and that all of us will endeavor henceforth to ensure it will continue to be.
NOW, THEREFORE, We the Executive Council of the Southern Conference on Slavic Studies do hereby proclaim that from the 2024 SCSS Conference and ever after shall the pre-banquet cocktail reception be declared the HAROLD GOLDBERG HAPPY HOUR and do commend this gathering and the raising of a glass by all our members every year in gratitude for his efforts.
