DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS: December 4, 2026

The SCSS is the largest (and best) of the regional Slavic and Eurasian Studies associations in the United States, known for its welcoming and supportive atmosphere. The purpose of the SCSS is to promote scholarship, education, and in all other ways to advance scholarly interest in Russian, Soviet and East European studies.  Membership in the SCSS is open to all persons interested in furthering these goals.  All participants must be members of SCSS and can join when registering for the conference. Registration opens in January.

Papers from all humanities and social sciences disciplines, on any topic and time period, are welcome.  We encourage participation from scholars of all Slavic, East European, and Eurasian regions, and scholars at all levels from senior scholars to undergraduate students.  PLEASE NOTE: SCSS does not offer funding to support conference travel for participants.  

We strongly encourage complete panel or roundtable proposals, but proposals for individual papers will also be accepted.  A panel typically consists of a chair, three members and a discussant, while a roundtable has a chair and three to five participants.

Conference Hotel

Not-To-Miss Events

Plan to arrive early on Thursday to join SCSS on a FREE excursion to the University of Georgia campus for a guided tour of the UGA collection of Russian Art. The Thursday evening reception (included in the registration fee) will be held at the museum. Buses will leave at 2:00pm.  More details to come.

Attend the Friday evening Harold Goldberg Happy Hour and the annual SCSS Conference Banquet, featuring this year’s John Sheldon Curtiss Lecture to be given by Ivan Kurilla.

Stay on Saturday evening for the Beach Party (details forthcoming).

Submit your recently published articles for the NEW Best Article in Slavic Studies Prize for 2027

The SCSS is pleased to call for submissions for its NEW SCSS Best Article in Slavic Studies Prize, for the best scholarly article in any disciplinary field of Russia, Eurasian, and East European Studies authored by a member of the Southern Conference on Slavic Studies.  The Article Prize is awarded every other year for articles published in the previous two years. For an article to be eligible for this prize, it must have been published in 2025 or 2026 and its author must be a member in good standing of the SCSS.  Self-nominations are accepted.

The winner of the SCSS Article Prize will be announced during the Friday Banquet at the 2027 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA, 4-6 March 2027 hosted by Kennesaw State University.  In addition to the outstanding recognition this prize confers, the winner will receive $300.  For more information about the annual conference and the call for submissions, visit www.southernconferenceonslavicstudies.com.
